Relationships are Key
Trusted caregivers and faithful leaders help children and youth to know and love Jesus as they explore the stories of the bible and respond in exciting and meaningful ways. Classes are grouped by age, but regularly combine with adults for intergenerational learning. Leaders work to include children with special learning needs.
When We Meet
The adventure of Christian education begins anew each year on Christian Education Sunday, the first Sunday after Labor Day. Summer Sundays give us the opportunity to try out different topics and themes for broadly aged groups. Sunday morning classes run weekly with a few exceptions:
- Memorial Day weekend
- Sunday after Independence Day
- Labor Day weekend
- Sunday after Christmas
Infants & Toddlers: Trusted caregivers create a safe, loving environment for our youngest children. Leaders of a variety of ages, including youth in Middle and High School, spend Time with the Toddlers by sharing a simple bible story out of a series called, God Loves Me. Through these basic stories and activities, young children become eager to learn about God, especially focusing on Jesus. Room 112
Age 4 through Fourth Grade explore the broad range of stories of scripture using Deep Blue. Deep Blue incorporates Bible stories, science activities, arts and crafts, animated video storytelling, and active games into a lived-faith experience that will help children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today. Age 4 – Grade 2 meet in Room 212. Grades 3 & 4 meet in Room 212
Children’s Worship, for children aged 3 1/2 through 5th grade, engages children in age-appropriate worship and wonder. During the worship service every Sunday, younger children (through 3rd grade) experience the basic stories of the bible through this Montessori-based approach to worship. Once a month, older children in Grades 3 – 5 encounter more theologically challenging stories using the Godly Play approach.
Middlers (Grades 5 – 8) are exploring scripture and theology as they prepare to confirm their faith. Using Echo the Story, they will do a two-year survey of the Old and New Testaments. The PC(USA) confirmation curriculum, Professing Our Faith, helps them discuss and explore their own beliefs. Every other month, the class will enjoy M&M, Music & Mission, as they serve and sing the songs of the faith together!
High School Youth apply their faith by choosing a ministry area in which to serve on Sunday mornings and other times. From assisting in a Sunday School class to working with the deacons, these students will try out what it means to be a fully-engaged member of the church. They will also join with the Middlers in bi-monthly M&M, Music & Mission.
Youth Fellowship is our evening gathering for Middle and High School youth. Youth Fellowship meets most Sunday evenings from 6 – 7:30 p.m. West Raleigh regularly partners with St. Giles Presbyterian to build a broader base for friendship, learning, and service.
BYG is our new monthly program for children in Grades 3 – 5. Building Youth Group will provide opportunities for our younger youth to learn, serve, and have fun together, often in the outdoors!
Parents are Partners
There are many ways to partner! For example, know the names of your child's teachers and leaders. As a family, pray for them regularly. Attend regularly. Spend time in scripture and prayer on your own and as a family. Engage in service projects that you care about. Parents who are not serving as teachers are encouraged to volunteer as classroom subs, chaperone youth trips, or volunteer to drive groups to various events. Foster relationships with families so that you will become a supportive community of faith.
