Coffee/breakfast items will be available and lunch will be served.

Congregational Care, Christian Formation and Stephen Ministry are partnering with Transitions LifeCare [formerly known as Hospice of Wake County] to bring to WRPC a screening of the PBS Frontline documentary called “Being Mortal.” Based on the best-selling book by Dr. Atul Gawande, this film explores the things that really matter to patients and their families who are facing terminal illness, their relationships with their medical team, and the family members who care for them.

A renowned New York surgeon and author, Dr. Gawande, challenges us to re-examine the way we think about aging, frailty, and death, as we often treat them as if they are just one more clinical problem to overcome. It is not only medicine or medical care needed in one’s declining years, but also life - a life with meaning, rich and as full as possible, to the end. To that end, he encourages preparing for future care needs and end-of-life decisions, before a medical crisis occurs.

Rich Gwaltney, the community outreach coordinator for Transitions LifeCare will facilitate our response to this film. After lunch he will lead the conversation, offering strategies for families to use to engage our loved ones in these meaningful, and often difficult conversations. While each of us looks to the day of our eternal life in our Lord God, this film demonstrates a reverence for the cycle of life. While there is sadness, there is also a sense of affirmation for this gift we call life. And that is worth celebrating!
